Safe Rooms vs. Safe Cores:

While Safe Rooms (“Panic Rooms”) have been the focus of much public attention, as stand-alone facilities in residential applications, their effectiveness is questionable. On average it takes less than ten seconds from the time a home alarm is activated for the intruder to be in the master bedroom. For most people, 10 seconds after their alarm has sounded, they are still trying to wake-up and figure out what the sound is. There simply is not enough time to get out of bed and into a Safe Room before the intruder has reached you. Your wife, children and guests would definitely not reach the Safe Room in time to protect themselves. For this and other reasons, Corbi developed the Safe Core. This unique steel reinforced, bullet-resistant zone protects all bedrooms, allowing family members and guests to remain together safely within the Core. Inside the Safe Core, typically includes a higher level of protection in an impenetrable window-less Safe Room with a vault like door. These Safe Rooms are usually equipped with monitoring and life safety equipment, fresh air supplies and tamper proof communications systems which allow occupants to remain connected to the outside. Though not a recommended stand alone facility, when used in conjunction with a Safe Core, the Safe Room becomes an effective and integral part of the overall Safe Environment.

In commercial applications, a standalone Safe Room may provide an adequate level of protection. Often notice of an impending threat can be received by the person(s) being protected long before they are in danger. However, to avoid the many uncertainties that could be a part of any crisis situation, a Safe Core is usually specified in the final analysis.
